Villain Transformation Details: Frieza Freeza's transformations bring in the idea that when a
character becomes too powerful, their current physical form is nothing more but a limitation holding them
back. In order to not only obtain, but contain this new-found power, the character must
totally transform their physical body. In Freeza's case, he will go through a series of
transformations that increase his over-all body size, and then end with a form that is just as tiny as his
original form! Remember... size isn't everything! Oooh ho ho ho! Note: the Japanese wording for Freeza's forms are taken
from the fourth daizenshuu.
| FREEZA: 1st-FORM
("furîza dai 1 [ ichi ] keitai") | In his first form, Freeza generally confines himself to his hover chair and sends his
henchmen to do all of the dirty work (namely collecting Dragon Balls). Freeza also wears
a similar form of upper-body armor as seen worn on the likes of Vegeta, Zarbon,
Dodoria, and the others. Freeza appears to be very small in height, which is shown to be true in the
rare occasions that he emerges from his hover-chair.
There really isn't much more to
say about Freeza's first form; he tends to just sit around and bark orders, not really showing
much. His tail is relatively thick in width, able to crack the ground when slammed.
His "helmet"-type head has two horns that protrude in near 45 degree angles.
Freeza decides that he will transform and show off his further stages, though, when prompted by
Vegeta... and so it begins... NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 45; Manga Chapter 247 Merely but a glimpse into the future horrors,
Freeza prefers to sit in his hover chair and bark orders at his
henchmen. |
| | FREEZA: 2nd-FORM ("furîza dai 2 [ ni ] keitai") | Freeza's second form is an almost complete opposite of his first form, in terms of general
physical structure. The two horns on his head now protrude straight out to the sides,
and then sharply both turn directly up into the air. Freeza's muscle tone
is exponentially increased, which can be clearly seen on his chest and stomach areas.
Freeza's raw strength and speed
also increase while in this form. Piccolo, after merging with Nail, appears to be at a
near fighting stand-still with Freeza in his second form. Many people confuse Freeza in
his second form with King Cold (in his only form that the viewers ever see). Perhaps
King Cold remains in a second-form, or perhaps King Cold is what an older, adult first-form
looks like... we'll never know! NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 77; Manga Chapter 296 Increasing in strength, speed, and
size, Freeza's second form seems to be simply a larger version of his
first form. |
| | FREEZA:
3rd-FORM ("furîza dai 3 [ san ] keitai") | When Freeza decides that he must transform into his third form, he states that no-one has
ever seen this form before (which leads us, as the viewers, to realize that Freeza,
even only in his second form, has been more than enough to trample over any
fighter he has since come across in the universe). The third form is the strangest of the bunch,
but also helps set up an amazing contrast that will lead into Freeza's fourth
(and final) form.
In
this form, Freeza's neck elongates causing his face to somewhat shift around. His
nose almost completely disappears, somewhat merging with his mouth. The back of
his head shoots back and grows another set of horns, all of which slightly curve into the air,
now. The weight of Freeza's larger head and horns must be somewhat large,
as he appears to hunch over himself slightly, even when standing up straight. Despite Freeza's speed
being more than enough to make play of Piccolo, he becomes fearful of the
densetsu no sûpâ saiya-jin ("Legendary Super Saiyan"), even if he will not admit to it. Rather
than take any chances, Freeza begins to almost immediately transform into
his final form. NOTES:
FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 83; Manga Chapter
302 Much different than his first two forms, Freeza's third
form has apparently never been seen by anyone! Strength and speed increase yet again, while
the physical form mutates into something completely different.
Only staying in this form for a very small amount of time, Freeza would rather not risk
the chance and transform, yet again. |
| | FREEZA:
FINAL-FORM ("furîza saishû keitai") | Trying to convince himself that he is not afraid of a Legendary Super Saiyan appearing,
Freeza takes no risks and transforms for a third time into his fourth and final (sorta)
form. As set up by the previous form, the contrast from his third form is
incredible. Rather than continuing to increase in size, Freeza turns back into a short, lizard-like,
almost harmless looking creature. He will soon show, though, the horrors of
this form.
Gone
is the "helmet"-like head, which may have actually retreated back into his body; a purple
area now takes its place, and does the same on his shoulders and chest, as
well. The strange thick lines of orange color and stripes are gone from his face, which is now a smooth,
normal white. While not quite a transformation, Freeza can further adjust his body in this form. While
fighting Super Saiyan Goku, Freeza discovers he needs to raise his power to a full
100%. Rather than going through a complete transformation, Freeza bulks up his
body, increasing his muscle size and over-all body size, as well. Despite reaching his 100% power,
Freeza is still no match for Super Saiyan Goku, and is ultimately defeated.
But he's not quite dead, yet... !
NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 84; Manga Chapter 304 Freeza reaches his final normal stage and
transformation, reverting back to a smaller, more lizard-like
form. He is able to bulk-up his body to achieve 100% power, but finds himself much less of a
match than he thought he was for Super Saiyan Goku. |
| | MECHA-FREEZA
("meka furîza") | Freeza's remains are found in space by his father, King Cold. Freeza is brought aboard the
spaceship and is rebuilt into a new "mecha"-like cybernetic form. The entire bottom
half of Freeza's body (not to mention the right side of his face!) had to be
rebuilt, along with various other parts of his entire body. Freeza and King Cold return to Earth
seeking revenge on Goku, the Super Saiyan. When Freeza finds that Goku has
not yet returned, he instead turns his attention on killing everyone else! Ultimately, Trunks
appears and kills Freeza for good.
We do not know if Freeza's strength and/or speed has improved
much, due to Trunks making such short work of him. Freeza is most likely at least as strong as he
was, previously... probably much more so due to his cybernetic enhancements. NOTES: FIRST
APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 118; Manga Chapter 329 Upon
his arrival to Earth, we discover that Freeza has not been killed,
but has instead been "reborn" (in a sense) into a new cybernetic body. Of course, he
will promptly be killed by Trunks, but not before looking pretty
bad-ass! |
|
Cell
Cell's transformations are different from those of, say,
Freeza's or the Saiyans'. In order to transform into his second and third (kanzentai,
or "perfect") forms, he has to absorb two specific individuals (those being Jinzôningen
#17 and #18). Cell absorbs people through his tail, the end of which can expand to fully surround and
take in an entire person (as seen in the image at the right; 2nd-Form Cell preparing to
absorb #18). It is possible for Cell to absorb others, but they do not result in physical
changes.
| BABY CELL | Cell's original, baby form floats in Dr. Gero's basement laboratory. In our present
timeline, this "Baby Cell" is killed by Trunks and Kuririn when they discover the basement
(which included some jinzôningen blueprints). In the future timeline,
however, it grows to full-size, cracks out of the machine, kills Trunks (therefore stealing his time
machine), and travels back to our present timeline in order to absorb Jinzôningen
#17 & #18.
NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 145; Manga Chapter 365 Baby Cell just sits in the tank, totally
unaware of his surroundings, and the fact that he's about to be
killed... |
| | LARVA
/ HUSK / EGG SHELL | Shown here in the middle of returning to his original larva form, Cell grew from the
above "baby" form into a larva form, which also included a giant husk (which Gohan, Bulma,
and Trunks discovered out in the woods). The larva would break out of this
husk, which would result in Cell's first actual form (which was very lizard-like). In the future
timeline, Cell kills Trunks and steals his time machine. Cell, in his first
form, cannot fit into the time machine, however, and is forced to degenerate into his larva
form. This larva form somewhat creates a purple egg (which Gohan and the others also find); when
Cell arrives in the timeline, he bursts from this egg, encased in the husk as larva.
The larva breaks out of the husk, leaving it empty in the woods near the time
machine. This husk was the first thing discovered, and the first indication that something evil
was on its way... and may have even been here for years! In our timeline,
once Cell breaks from the husk, he never returns. It is only in the future timeline that the
degeneration occurs.
NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 140; Manga Chapter 358-359 From the egg hatches a larva
form of Cell, which leaves behind a husk before transforming into the
true first stage. |
| | FIRST FORM ("seru" /
"CELL") | Cell first appears to us, already in first-form, absorbing every human he comes across in
Ginger Town. Unlike his larva form, he now fully walks upright on two legs. His facial
features have not yet fully developed, and still retains a "beak"-like mouth,
rather than traditional human-like features seen in later forms. The two sections of his head
shoot off in different directions, rather than nearly straight up as in the
next two forms.
While in this
form, Cell attains greater power by absorbing all of the people he comes across,
regardless of their strength. Rather than fully absorbing people, though, he seems to
suck the life out of them by stabbing them with the pointed end of his tail, which literally
drains the victim of their body mass. This Cell is from a future timeline where he has killed
Trunks and stolen the time machine. He has returned to the past (our present timeline)
in order to fully absorb Jinzôningen #17 and #18. By absorbing each of
these, Cell will reach another stage (one at a time), ultimately resulting in his kanzentai
("perfect") stage. Until then, Cell absorbs all humans he comes across. Note that, in the original Japanese
version, Cell's voice does not change from form to form. NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 141; Manga Chapter 361 Cell's first stage is very lizard-like in
nature, without many fully-formed facial features. Cell will need
to absorb Jinzôningen #17 and #18 in order to reach the next two stages.
|
| | SECOND FORM ("dai 2 [ ni ]
keitai") | After absorbing Jinzôningen #17 (and a great deal of innocent humans),
Cell reaches his second stage. In this stage, Cell's facial features begin to resemble a human's more
and more.
While
the nose is not yet fully formed (as it will be in the next stage), he now
has an actual mouth. The two off-shooting sections of his head now go straight into the air, as
well. In
this stage, Cell's power has increased exponentially, but he is still no match
for the newly powered-up Super Saiyans. His rear end is handed to him by "Super
Vegeta," who ultimately makes the mistake of letting his pride control him; Vegeta allows Cell
to absorb Jinzôningen #18, thus completing himself and achieving
his kanzentai ("perfect") form. Note that, in the original Japanese version, Cell's voice
does not change from form to form. NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 152; Manga Chapter 372 After having absorbed Jinzôningen
#17, Cell takes on more humanoid facial features, and drastically
increases in power and speed. He is still not yet a match for the fully-powered Super
Saiyans, though... |
| | KANZENTAI
("PERFECT FORM") | When Vegeta allows Cell to absorb Jinzôningen #18, his absorption process
is complete, resulting in the "perfect" form. Cell is an organic being in every way, now
(or so he explains), complete with fully-formed nose and mouth.
Cell's power, in this form, is greater than that
of even the Super Saiyans (Goku, Vegeta, Trunks). Vegeta and Trunks, even
in their advanced Super Saiyan forms, are unable to so much as scratch him. Goku declares his first
loss against Cell during the "Cell Games," leaving only Gohan to challenge
the monster. Gohan undergoes a new transformation (into Super Saiyan 2, thanks to a great
deal of Cell's physical and mental abuse, pushing Gohan over the edge) to battle Cell,
ultimately defeating him. Note that, in the original Japanese version, Cell's voice
does not change from form to form. Also, the fourth daizenshuu writes "DEVELOPED FORM"
under "kanzentai," but this is not quite as accurate a translation
as "perfect form." NOTES:
FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 159; Manga Chapter
382 After having absorbed Jinzôningen #17 and #18,
Cell has reached his "perfect" form. His power is far greater than any Super Saiyan's, and
he has taken on the facial and body features of most regular
characters. |
| | SUPER SAIYAN CELL... ? USSJ CELL...
?! |
To make matters even more complicated,
Cell appears to even go "USSJ," the interesting stage between SSJ1 and SSJ2.
in two instances. The first time Cell shows off this stage is shortly after Trunks transforms into
USSJ2; Cell mocks him by also turning into an extremely "buff" stage, scoffing
at the drop in speed and high energy consumption. Later, when SSJ2 Gohan knocks back Cell's
giant Kamehameha with no problem, Cell makes the same mistake that Vegeta and Trunks
had made, earlier; he bulks up his muscle size, which increases his over-all
strength... but drastically reduces his speed. Is this USSJ? We don't really know for
sure, but it's pretty convincing...! NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | "USSJ
Cell"; DBZ Episode 165; Manga Chapter 387 Showcasing golden auras on more
than one occasion, and even going so far as to power into a very
USSJ-esque form, can we safely assume Cell can go SSJ... ?! |
| | SUPER KANZENTAI
? | Since Cell is comprised of the greatest fighters across the universe, this naturally
includes many of the Saiyans (including Vegeta and Goku). Saiyans that are recovered from
near death exponentially increase in power (as seen by Goku and Vegeta during
the Freeza arc).
When
a single cell of Cell's is able to live through the blast on Kaiô-sama's
planet, it somehow "remembers" the structure of kanzentai Cell (remember
that Gohan had kicked out #18, which resulted in Cell degenerating back into 2nd form before
exploding). This cell completely resurrects Cell into a "super" kanzentai
form; one that is not only "perfect," but also has a great power-up due to the
Saiyan DNA! Cell appears to almost be in Super Saiyan 2, so to speak, due to the large amounts
of energy and lightning that surround his body. In the North American version of the Budokai video
games, this form of Cell's is referred to as "power-weighted." NOTES: FIRST
APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 189; Manga Chapter 413 While
not physically different from regular "Perfect" Cell, in his new
"super" stage, Cell tends to have lightning surround him a la Gohan's SSJ2. His
speed and power rival SSJ2 Gohan, as well, most likely due to the Saiyan cells
in him allowing him to recover and increase in strength after
near-death. |

Majin Buu Buu's transformations
are similar to both the Saiyans and Cell. Some of Buu's transformations are caused by
anger and a need to change the physical shape to hold this power, while others are caused by
absorptions of other characters (such as Gotenks and Piccolo). Some of Buu's transformations are
caused by the "venting" of steam, energy, and physical manifestations, as seen on the
right. Just like Cell, however, you can always tell that Buu is Buu; the over-all pink color remains, along
with the antenna on his head.
This is pure speculation,
but when "Super" Buu begins his absorptions of other characters, he appears to take the
clothing and physical appearance of the "strongest" character he currently has within him. See below
for more information. Also, please note that almost every "name" of a form/transformation
for Majin Buu are fan-created names. While some were later adopted by FUNimation (and
almost used as "fact"), the truth is that they simply originated with fans and their need to
distinguish forms. Note:
the Japanese wording for Buu's main four forms are taken from the fourth daizenshuu. Majin Buu transformation

| "MAJIN BUU (ZEN)" / MAJIN BUU (GOOD) | The "first" form we see of Buu's is when Babidi finally succeeds in resurrecting him. When
Buu appears, Babidi is in complete shock, but Kaiôshin is fearful for his life. Why
would Babidi be at such a loss, while Kaiôshin cannot seem to overcome his fear?
Babidi seems to think that something went wrong during the resurrection process. That's not
quite true, but there is more to the story of Majin Buu...
In this first "fat" form, Babidi
is really just an innocent child with an insane amount of power. Buu doesn't quite
understand the concept of "right" and "wrong," but instead just wants to have fun and have
a friend! Death and destruction are his ways of having fun, until told to
stop by Mr. Satan (because he is just a nice guy that honestly tried to befriend Majin Buu! *snicker*...
yeah, right!). NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 232; Manga Chapter 460 "Fat" Majin Buu; incredibly strong, easily
persuaded, with a childlike innocence. |
| | "MAJIN BUU
(JUNSUI AKU)" / MAJIN BUU (PURE EVIL) | When Bee (the dog) is shot, Majin Buu goes into an uncontrollable fury. His only two
friends, Mr. Satan and Bay, are now reduced to one. While Buu is ultimately able to heal
Bee, the repercussions of the attack are too great.
The attack on Bay prompts Majin Buu to vent out an
incredible amount of steam from the vents on his head; it appears that he is actually
venting out, in a physical manifestation, all of the evil intents and thoughts
he holds inside of himself! What emerges is a skinny, gray, "evil" Majin Buu that attacks the "Fat"
Majin Buu. His speed and power surpass "Fat" Buu, and eventually turns him
into a cookie and eats him! This "absorbing" of the "Fat" buu results in the changing
into "Super" Buu, as seen below. NOTE: Technically, once Majin Buu vents out the "Evil" Buu, he becomes "Mr.
Buu" (as further described below). Since he's only around for a short time at this
point, we will discuss him in more detail, later. NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 255; Manga Chapter 485 "Evil" Majin Buu; stronger than "Fat" Buu,
non-vocal, gray-colored. Turns "Fat" Buu into a cookie and eats
him, resulting in "Super" Buu. |
| | "MAJIN
BUU (AKU)" / MAJIN BUU (EVIL) | When the "Evil" Buu eats the "Fat" Buu cookie, the result is a tall, skinny (but buff)
"Super" Buu. This Buu speaks a lot more than the previous two forms, and seems to enjoy
cracking his neck quite a bit. He is extremely impatient (even more so than
"Fat" Buu was), and won't hesitate to not only let you know verbally, but let you know with
violence.
"Super"
Buu desires to fight the strongest adversary that can be found. When he is
promised such a fighter, he actually (willingly) chooses to wait and fight this person! This fighter is actually the fusion
of Goten and Trunks, Gotenks; the two boys are training / sleeping in the
Room of Spirit and Time). Buu is unable to wait the full time necessary for the boys to prepare, and
begins to go a little crazy. Wasting no time killing every single last human
being on Earth (with the exception of Mr. Satan; the "Fat" Buu inside of him still seems to have
some power over his mind), Buu demands Piccolo take him to the fighter. Piccolo
leads Buu (the long way!) to the Room of Spirit and Time to fight Gotenks. Buu is much stronger than Gotenks
in regular Super Saiyan form, but does make the mistake of allowing a few
attacks to connect (such as the "Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack") that do quite a bit of damage to him.
While SSJ3 Gotenks is clearly stronger than this "Super" Buu, Buu (unfortunately)
comes up with a plan, and Gotenks becomes absorbed! NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 255; Manga Chapter 485 When "Evil" Buu eats the "Fat" Buu cookie,
the result is a tall, thin (but incredibly buff) "Super" Buu.
"Super" Buu enjoys cracking his neck, is extremely impatient, and desires to fight the strongest
foe, no matter what it takes in order to do so. |
| | MAJIN
BUU (EVIL) (+GOTENKS) | When "Super" Buu is unable to defeat Gohan (and is, in fact, quite outclassed by
Gohan's new "Mystic" power-up from Old Kaiôshin!), he takes matters into his own hands, and
begins to absorb the other fighters. First on the list is Gotenks!
Buu surrounds Gotenks with part
of his body that has been ripped off, and brings it back to his main body,
completely absorbing the fighter. In this new form, Majin Buu's power increases even more than before.
In addition, the antenna on his head grows in length (due to Gotenks' SSJ3
form and its long hair). Buu even adapts some of Gotenks's moves in this form (such as the
"Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack" that hit him, earlier, now featuring mini ghost Buus!).
Buu doesn't stop with Gotenks, though... NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 265; Manga Chapter 499 When "Super" Buu absorbs Gotenks, his antenna
grows a great deal down his back, and he wears a fusion vest.
Buu can also use Gotenks's attacks, including the "Super Ghost Kamikaze
Attack." |
| | MAJIN BUU (EVIL) (+GOTEN +TRUNKS
+PICCOLO) | Fearful of Gohan and his new-found power, Buu opts to go after Piccolo, as well as Gohan.
This is actually an interesting choice (not to mention a perfect one) on Buu's part;
why not go after one of the most intelligent fighters in the entire series?
Time after time, Piccolo had demonstrated that while he's not always the most powerful, his fighting
techniques and incredible displays of intelligence during battles have allowed
him to go head to head with even the toughest foes (IE - Cell Jr.).
Buu actually remains the same as his Gotenks form,
even after absorbing Piccolo, until the fusion time runs out. It is only here
that the fusion vest disappears and he is left with Piccolo's outfit. Despite the physical form
of Gotenks taking precedence, Buu does seem to exhibit traits of Piccolo immediately
after absorbing him (such as a somewhat different, more "noble" way of speaking,
and by the way he mentally toys with Gohan). Note that when Goku and Vegeta are absorbed by
Buu, Goten and Trunks have their own individual pods within Buu (which is
why this cannot be classified as a "Gotenks" absorption, per say). Buu's power does not
necessary increase by much, but of course, his intelligence goes up a notch. NOTES: FIRST
APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 267; Manga Chapter
502 Note that this absorption takes place in episode 265 / chapter
499, but this specific form of Buu (with Piccolo's outfit) appears in the numbers
listed above. When "Super" Buu absorbs Piccolo, his looks remain
the same until Gotenks's fusion time runs out. At this point, Buu wears Piccolo's cape.
In this form, Buu now has the strength of Gotenks plus the fighting
intelligence of Piccolo. |
| | MAJIN
BUU (EVIL) (+GOTEN +TRUNKS +PICCOLO +GOHAN) | When Goku arrives back on the scene, ready to fuse with Gohan to create an ultimate
fighter, Buu knows he has to, again, take measures into his own hands. Buu absorbs Gohan,
leaving Goku with only Mr. Satan and Dende to choose from!
In this form, Buu loses Piccolo's
cape and the fusion vest, choosing to wear Gohan's orange gi, instead.
The long antenna stays on his head, though. Power? Through the roof! With the "Fat" Majin Buu,
Gotenks, Piccolo, and now Gohan as his disposable... Majin Buu almost seems
like he would be an undefeatable foe! Goku's got something up his sleeve, though, when Vegeta
returns to the battlefield... the fusion earrings are still good! Goku and Vegeta
fuse into Vejito, who is more than a match for Majin Buu, even with all his new
strength. Majin Buu turns Vegetto into candy, but the world's strongest coffee candy still packs
a wallop! Buu even tries to infect Vegetto, but it's no use... Vejito is too
strong. What's left to do? Try absorbing Vejito, of course! Vejito lets himself be absorbed, but puts
up a barrier before completely going in. When Vejito lands inside of Majin Buu, the fusion of Vejito
is torn apart back into Goku and Vegeta. Goku and Vegeta begin to tear apart
the friends and family absorbed, when they come across... "Fat" Majin Buu! Once everyone
is ripped out, and they all escape through a pore, Buu begins to undergo his strangest
transformation, yet! NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 267; Manga Chapter 502 "Super" Buu goes after Gohan, next. In this
form, Buu completely has rid himself of the fusion vest and Piccolo's
cape, keeping only the SSJ3 hair length antenna. He now wears Gohan's orange gi.
|
| | "MAJIN BUU
(JUNSUI)" / MAJIN BUU (PURE / GENUINE) | Once Goku and his friends are ripped from the innards of the new "Super" Buu and "Fat"
Buu is disconnected, somehow the absolutely original Majin Buu is all that remains! This
may seem (and is) completely confusing; if everyone is ripped out of "Super"
Buu (being Gotenks, Piccolo, Gohan, Goku, and Vegeta; "Fat" Buu is disconnected on
the inside)... all that should remain is "Gray/Evil" Buu, just as he was before he started
absorbing people.
However,
what we have is the original form of Buu, as created by the magician Bibidi
(Babidi's father). This Buu is chibi (small) in form; basically, a
diminutive "Super" Buu. This Buu, however, never really speaks, instead choosing to make strange
chirping and bellowing noises, yelping and flopping around like a combination
between a newborn baby and a monkey! This Buu has the ability to learn techniques simply by watching
them, nevermind experiencing them (as seen by his teleporting to Kaiôshin's planet
after watching Goku use Shunkan-idô, where-as Cell had to actually be in the
teleportation to use it). The strength and speed of this Buu are nearly incomprehensible;
Goku and Vegeta are no match, and with Vegeta's earring crushed, fusion cannot
be attained. This new Buu is ultimately defeated by Goku with a giant Genki-Dama comprised
of energy donated from every human on Earth, but not before doing one last
"transformation"... NOTES:
FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 278; Manga Chapter
508 Once Goten, Trunks, Piccolo, and Gohan are removed from
Buu by Goku and Vegeta, Buu reverts to his original form... a chibi version of Buu!
Buu is non-vocal, except for his incessant yelping. His speed
and strength are nearly unmatched, and he is able to learn new techniques
simply by watching them be performed. |
| | MAJIN
BUU ("MR. BUU"; loss of evil after split) | When Chibi Buu is formed and begins attacking people, there is still one person he cannot
bring himself to hit... Mr. Satan. Buu remembers how Mr. Satan befriended him and
treated him so well, but still desires to let the evil take over and destroy, destroy,
destroy!
Buu
hunches over, cluching his head in pain, spits something out... and... what's
this?! Out
comes the "Fat" Majin Buu?! With "Fat" Buu out of his system, Buu truly has come back to
his original, pure evil form! However, the other Buu (sometimes called "Mr.
Buu") is now a Buu without any evil, what-so-ever, in his system. He is a pure-hearted fighter and
even tries to help out in the battle by attacking Chibi Buu! When you really sit back and think
about it, he shouldn't be able to co-exist with Chibi Buu... but whatever! NOTES: FIRST
APPEARS... | DBZ Episode 282; Manga Chapter 512 When
"Chibi" Buu becomes frustrated with not being able to attack Mr.
Satan, he vents and spits out the older, "Fat" Majin Buu. This "Mr. Buu" does not
contain the evil that "Chibi" Buu has, and instead fights alongside Goku
and the others. |
| | MAJIN
BUU (+SOUTHERN KAIÔSHIN; anime-only flashback) In an anime-only flashback right after Buu degenerates into his "Chibi" form, the viewers
are treated to a story showcasing just how the "Fat" Majin Buu came to be! When Bibidi
created Majin Buu, they attacked the five Kaiôshin (Northern, Southern, Eastern,
Western, and Dai Kaiôshin) of the universe (the only one remaining, from the East, being
the one we know from our present timeline who appeared with Kibito).
Majin Buu killed two Kaiôshin
(Northern and Western), but managed to absorb two others before being sealed away by the Kaiôshin
that we know! Buu first absorbs the Southern Kaiôshin, and transforms into
an incredibly "buff" version of himself shown above (which increases his strength quite
dramatically, apparently). After this, Buu absorbs another fat, jolly old man... Dai
Kaiôshin. When Buu absorbed this Kaiôshin... the "Fat" Majin Buu that is first
introduced to us is formed! The fat, jolly Kaiôshin holds back some of Buu's
power when absorbed, and turns him into an almost innocent, child-like monster. Note that in the manga, this "form"
is somewhat seen, but only as a middle-ground during Buu's full transformation
into Chibi Buu. The full series of events (and Buu actually walking around in this stage) is seen
only in the anime-exclusive flashback. NOTES: FIRST APPEARS... | DBZ
Episode 279; Manga Chapter 507 Bibidi's original Buu kills two
Kaiôshins, & absorbs another two. After absorbing the fat, jolly Kaiôshin,
(which is one of the afore mentioned absorbees) Buu turns into the "Fat" Buu that we are first
introduced to earlier in the series. |
| | UUB As he destroys Chibi Buu with a giant Spirit Bomb, Goku wishes that he could one
day fight Buu again. King Yemma hears Goku's request, and works a little afterlife
magic. Little does anyone know, but Buu is being reincarnated... without evil...
as a human child!
At
the 28th Tenka-ichi Budôkai, Goku realizes that a new, strong challenger
awaits him... in the form of a scared, poor little boy named "Uub" ("Buu" spelled
backwards). Goku forces this child to show his hidden powers by verbally and physically attacking
him; everyone is astounded to see such a young child (really only grade-school
age) display such incredible power. Goku, always the terrible father and husband that he is, decides to take
off with Uub and train. And so ends DragonBall (and thus DragonBall Z)
with Goku leaving with this child to train! Of course, 10 years later they will
re-emerge from Dende's Palace when DragonBall GT begins... but that's a completely
new story, one which involves yet another transformation of Majin Buu! NOTES: FIRST

Movie Villains
The DragonBall Z
movies all seem to revolve around villains that, in one way or another, transform into different
stages and/or forms of themselves. It's classic DBZ formula; our heroes seem to have the
upper-hand, right up until the point where the villain reveals that he has enormous power reserved for these
situations, obtained through some type of transformation! Yadda yadda yadda, they transform,
our heroes do the same thing, we all walk home happy! In fact, the only movie that doesn't seem to have any type of real
transformation is DBZ movie two; Dr. Uiro breaks out from behind the wall already
in his giant mecha-type unit, while Dr. Kochin was just a cyborg the entire time (and
thus able to attach machine guns to his arms). Every single other DBZ movie features at least one transforming
villain, and this is our guide to these (sometimes absurd) transformations!
| DBZ MOVIE 1: Garlic Jr. & Henchmen (Ginger, Nicky, Sansho)
| Garlic Jr. appears at first to just be a dwarf with no real power. Sure, he's got his
lackeys, but what does he actually do?! In his fight against Kami-sama, Garlic
Jr. does indeed prove to have a decent amount of power, dodging attacks and
launching ki blasts left and right.
Especially after being granted his wish of immortality, it
doesn't seem like Garlic Jr. has a thing on Earth to fear. Prancing around
like he is Earth's ruler, Garlic has his lackeys fight off the intruders, but it won't be long until
he has to fight, himself... It is only when faced with a combination of Goku and Piccolo that Garlic Jr. shows
his true form. In almost an instant, Garlic Jr. transforms from his miniature self into a
giant version of himself, with power and speed even greater than that of
Goku and Piccolo combined. It seems like Garlic Jr. will soon be taking over
the Earth with no problem; that is, rather, until Gohan blasts up from the rubble and starts getting
a little upset! Gohan is the only one able to stand up to Garlic Jr.'s blasts
and power, and is able to finally head butt Garlic Jr. into the "Dead Zone" he has
created.
Garlic Jr.'s
henchmen (Ginger, Nicky, and Sansho) have somewhat similar transformations.
To initiate these transformations into their "Kyodai-ka" (or "Giant
Form"), they must take a step back and yell a certain unusual... err... battle cry?! Their
transformations bulk them up which result in both more power and speed.
NOTES: | DBZ
MOVIE 1: Garlic Jr. & Henchmen (Ginger, Nicky, Sansho) Garlic
Jr. does not appear to be much in his first form, although he does put up
a decent fight against Kami-sama. It is only when faced with Goku and Piccolo
that he transforms himself into a large beast who is faster and
more powerful than even the two heroes, combined. Luckily, Gohan is around to save the
day... Garlic
Jr.'s henchmen yell out their strange words to initiate their
transformations, which pump them up to new power and speed. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 3: Tullece | Tullece appears on the scene looking exactly like Goku in nearly every way; facial
features, hair, and even muscle tone. At this point in the series, Goku has not yet gone
Super Saiyan, and is only able to use Kaiô-Ken to temporarily increase
his strength and speed; Turles does not show any hint of these types of abilities, and in fact,
avoids fighting for the most part until later in the movie! It is only when
he is faced with Goku that we truly see what Turles' plan was all along... to eat
the holy fruit.
Upon eating the fruit, Tullece's muscles bugle and expand an incredible deal
almost immediately. Interestingly, though, they do not stay at this point; they seem to contract right
back down to normal, even though it is quite obvious that Tullece's strength
and speed have increased exponentially. This quasi-transformation puts Tullece's
strength far above Goku's own, and it is only with the Genki-Dama that Goku is able
to defeat him.
NOTES: | DBZ MOVIE 3: Tullece Tullece's
"transformation" is not quite a huge change; all that really happens is a very quick
surge in power and energy that plows down his body, bulging out
his chest, arms, and legs. After eating the fruit, he looks exactly the same, but has increased
speed and power. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 4: Slug | Temporarily running out of ideas for characters? Let's just repeat the Piccolo-Daimaô
arc all over again in a short DBZ movie! That's pretty much what DBZ movie 4 amounts
to, and Slug takes full advantage of his Namekian abilities... abilities that we've already
seen far too often in the show, already!
When he first shows up, he is quite aged; what better to do
than use Earth's Dragon Balls to again wish for youth?! Just as Piccolo-Daimaô
had done, Slug returns to his (more powerful) youthful form by using the Dragon
Balls. Sound like you've
heard it before? Oh, just wait! But the fun doesn't stop there, oh no! Just as we had seen Ma Junior do at the 23rd
Tenka-ichi Budôkai, Slug uses the good ol' "grow a gazillion times larger" ability.
In essence, Slug is as derivative of a character as it gets in DBZ (and oh,
how it gets!), and his transformations follow suit in this very fashion.
If you're looking for fun new
transformations... keep on looking ^_~. NOTES: | DBZ MOVIE 4: Slug Slug's
transformation also aren't quite major changes. The first is his
granted wish, which brings him eternal youth; Slug changes from an elderly (yet still powerful)
Namekian into a young, incredibly powerful Namekian!
Also, Slug has the ability to increase his general body size, and towers over
Goku as he pummels him to near-defeat. |
| | DBZ MOVIES 5
& 6: Cooler & Metal Coola | When we first see Cooler, the scene taking place is actually a flashback to the Bardock vs
Frieza fight from many years ago. Cooler is up on his own spaceship watching the
events. When he turns around and we finally see his face and body, he appears to be in a
form vastly different from that of Frieza's first form; in fact, he seems to be in
a form equivalent to Freeza's fourth (and final) form. Interestingly, we eventually
learn from Cooler that he can actually transform one stage more than Frieza can! He makes
this transformation from the one and only stage we see him in; we can only
be left to assume that this was indeed his fourth form all along (since going one more would make
it five, with Frieza's last being four... it's all interesting math).
So why was Coola sitting in the
comfort and safety of his own spaceship in his fourth form? Perhaps he had just
recently come from an incredible fight!... or perhaps it was just so we would know who the heck
the character was when he showed up on Earth ^_~. Cooller's transformation into a fifth stage is quite impressive (note: the sixth
daizenshuu simply refers to this stage as "Cooler's Final Stage"). Somewhat hinting
back to the third form of the brothers' transformation sequence, four horns are
grown out from the side and top of the head. He also sports a really nifty (almost mechanical
sounding/looking?) "mask"-type thing that covers his mouth and jaw; the one
line he speaks before letting the "mask" cover his jaw is quite creepy sounding and
looking! As with all transformation we saw with Freeza, this allows Coola's strength and
speed to jump through the roof. Unfortunately for him, Super Saiyan Goku is
able to triumph in the end, knocking him into the sun with a massive Kamehameha. Interestingly,
as Cooler is being burned up by the sun, the heat seems to dissolve away parts
of this transformation, seemingly pushing him back into fourth form...
DBZ movie 6 rolls around, and we get some more transformed Coola! Strangely, this
"transformation" should really be considered more of an outside "upgrade" than anything else;
Coola had very little to do with it. However, we don't realize this when "he"
first walks up to Goku in the feature. Coola appears to be completely metallic, now, and almost
indestructible. Goku isn't able to do any damage, even using Kaiô-Ken;
his punches don't even so much as phase Coola. It takes some Super Saiyan action to get
some damage done, and even then, we are shocked to find Coola is not only able to repair
himself on the spot, but apparently make adjustments in order to better retaliate.
It is revealed, however, that this Metal Coola (and the hundreds of others that appear on
the mountain ledge!) are actually just remote-controlled creations of the actual
Cooler, who is nothing more than a head hooked up via wires to the Big Gete
Star within the spaceship. After being defeated by Goku, Coola drifted into a "Machine Planet,"
and combined himself with the main computer. With this computer, he is able
to create endless amount of "Metal Coolas," each of which can automatically repair themselves and
up their battle strength. It takes some massive overloading of the computer
from Goku and Vegeta's Super Saiyan power "leaks" (which were actually completely
intentional) to "crash the computer," so to speak, and bring Cooler and the Big Gete Star
to a halt. The final remains, the main computer chip, is crushed by Vegeta
(with his classic "Hmph!" no less!) as he blasts off into space...
NOTES: | DBZ
MOVIES 5 & 6: Cooler & Metal Cooler Cooler can take the
transformation sequence one step further than Frieza can, to a fifth stage. The horns
grow back out of the head, and a strange mask comes down to cover
the mouth and jaw. After defeat, Coola melds with the Big Gete Star's main computer and is able
to create endless "Metal" versions of himself. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 7:
Jinzôningen Jûsan-gô | Dr. Gero may have been killed
by # 17, but as shown with Cell, Dr. Gero's death is hardly enough to keep down the
old scientist's rage. Deep down below Dr. Gero's laboratory is an extra room and computer
ticking away. Initially, two jinzôningen are let out (# 14 and #
15). After they have already left in their pursuit of Goku, yet another jinzôningen hops
out from his capsule, this one labeled # 13... Other than # 17 and # 18 (neither of which are in this movie, other than the opening
sequence), # 13 is definitely the most human-looking over all the jinzôningen.
He is tall and does not have much in the way of body mass, but seems to keep
up with Goku's speed and strength quite easily (before he turns SSJ, anyway). In fact, it does
not seem like # 13 is frightened of anything, and shows little emotion; when
confronted with other characters, he simply notes to them that his only desire is to kill Goku, and
is not interested in any of them.
It is only when Vegeta, Trunks, and Goku all turn into Super Saiyans (and # 14 & # 15
are defeated) that # 13 starts to take matters into his own hands. The main computer
chip and internal power supplies from both # 14 and # 15 (equaling four parts,
total) float over to # 13. He absorbs the two computer chips into his head, and the power supplies
into his chest. Upon receiving these four items, he begins to undergo an extremely
intense transformation, breaking out of his clothes, growing in size, and turning
blue!
This
Gattai Jûsan-gô ("Integrated 13," the term used in the sixth daizenshuu)
is an extremely buff creature with speed and strength (but who doesn't
seem to want to speak, much!) surpassing any of the fighters, including Goku. It is
only when Goku's friends distract him long enough to form a Genki-Dama that he
is finally defeated. NOTES: | DBZ MOVIE 7: Jinzôningen Jûsan-gô When #
13 absorbs the main computer chips and power supplies from # 14 and #
15, he grows into a giant blue creature with orange hair. He no longer
speaks (other than "Son Goku!" as he's being killed), and seems to be nearly
indestructible. |
| | DBZ MOVIES 8, 10, 11: Broli | densetsu no
sûpâ saiya-jin... The Legendary Super Saiyan When we first are introduced to Broli, he appears to be nothing more than a calm
(perhaps scared?) young man, a survivor of the Saiyan race with his father, Paragus. They have
come to Earth in (supposed) hopes to recruiting "King" Vegeta to once again
lead them as a people, this time in hopes of defeating the so-called "Legendary Super
Saiyan."
Things
start to change when Broly is confronted with Goku ("Kakarrot," of course!),
and he begins to lose his temper. Courtesy of a convenient flashback we are shown that, as a child (pre-teen?), Broli has
seemingly already transformed into a Super Saiyan and is running amuck out
of control; Broli was apparently born quite insane, and it did not seem to be
helped by Goku's incessant crying in the baby ward (the two were born on the same day)! Paragas
is forced to have a special device made that wraps around Broli's head. Via
a hand-held control, Paragas is able to keep Broli subdued (and not running around destroying
galaxies!).
However, now that Goku is back in the picture, Paragas' device is unable to fully control
Broly. For the first few instances of the fighting, Broli showcases a strange form
of Super Saiyan in which his hair is a green-ish/blue and stands on end. In some
cases, his pupils disappear (mostly when making the transformation from Super Saiyan to "Legendary
Super Saiyan," as described below).
MINI NOTE: To clear up any possible confusion, this is indeed
a full Super Saiyan transformation, as noted in the sixth daizenshuu.
It is unclear whether it is the lighting or Paragus' control device
that causes such strange looking hair, especially due to the regular Super
Saiyan form that Broli demonstrates in the tenth DBZ movie, which is described
below. |
Once Broly confronts Goku for the second time, he transforms directly into his "Legendary
Super Saiyan" stage. In this stage, Broly loses his pupils, his hair stands very much
on end (especially on the sides and in the back), his muscles increase in size
by the most dramatic sense we've ever seen in the entire DragonBall franchise... and
he appears to have no weaknesses, what-so-ever.
It's very difficult to place this stage in the canon
continuity of SSJ stages; it looks most similar to USSJ, but does not have its
weaknesses, similar to SSJ2. The sixth daizenshuu even goes so far as to name
this stage directly as its own entity (literally naming it "densetsu no sûpâ saiya-jin").
It is only Goku (with the combined power of all of his friends) that can defeat
Broly... and even that doesn't kill him... When Broly lands on Earth in movie 10, the viewers are
somewhat shocked to see him in neither regular form of "Legendary SSJ" form...
he appears as a regular Super Saiyan! With a much more reserved muscle bulk and
pupils, Broly crashes in his ship as a Super Saiyan and falls asleep... When Videl, Goten, and Trunks come across Broly, he has turned back into a regular Super
Saiyan, and continues to fight in his form for a rather long duration of time. While
as a regular Super Saiyan, Broly seems to have much more fun taking pleasure in the
destruction and pain he causes to his foes, smirking and licking the blood off of his lips.
It isn't until Gohan arrives and
is forced to transform into SSJ2 that Broly once again lets loose with the
"Legendary" form. The pupils disappear and the muscles bulk up, just as they had done in the previous
feature; this is the Broly that is a force to be reckoned with!
He is ultimately killed, once and for all, with a massive triple Kamehameha from the father
and his two sons. Broly may be dead... but he's not through transforming! In movie 11, we learn that Broli has been cloned at a bio-warrior production plant. What
the creators failed to note was the utter insanity that is Broly. When he breaks free,
he also sets loose strange goo in the plant which covers him, creating a very
mutant-like "Bio-Broly" (note: this is the official name for this character/clone, as written
in the sixth daizenshuu). Broly's clone seems to be in "Legendary" form
while in this stage since no pupils appear in the red eyes. There is also the strange, red,
beating heart. The only further "transformation" (somewhat) that this mutant undergoes
is a giant resizing of himself near the end of the feature .Popping out of
the ocean as a giant (literally), Broly's mutant/sludge clone is destroyed (for good, this time!)
with a double blast from Goten and Trunks.
NOTES: | DBZ MOVIES 8, 10, 11: Broly Broly
is perhaps the movie character that goes through the most transformations.
From his regular stage, to a strange version of regular Super Saiyan, all the
way to his "Legendary" Super Saiyan stage, Broly is just a ridiculously power
Saiyan able to hold his own and deal up destruction on a daily basis.
When he returns for DBZ Movie 10 we see a more traditional Super Saiyan stage, and in
Movie 11 we are treated to a very grotesque "Bio-Broly" clone. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 9:
Gokua & Bojack | In one of the only instances in DBZ history, both
the main villain and one of his henchmen have transformations! In both case,
they are pretty simple with slight color and muscle changes that are mostly
visible. Gokua is Bojack's henchman with a sword that battles Trunks. Like most of the other
henchmen, he speaks very little, and seems to have quite an ego! In his base form he sports
green skin, yellow hair, and some rather puffy shoulders. His body mass is
very well toned, but not to any excessive amount. His face is rather calm looking, as well. It seems
that when Gokua realizes that Trunks may be more of a match than he thought,
he pauses as the crystal he wears hanging from his necklace begins to glow, and his hair starts to
stand on end slightly. He raises his arms into the air, and when the water
clears away, he is much more buff than before, his hair is red, and his shirt has torn
apart. What is most interesting about Gokua's transformation has little to do with him,
and actually seems to have more to do with the movie's animators; in the second
scene (where Trunks ultimately kills him), his hair randomly goes back and forth between the new
red and the original yellow color! He does not seem to have transformed back (his body is still much larger
than before), and in the matter of just a couple frames and a crash through a building,
his hair has changed colors, only to change back again just another second
later! Intentional, or mistake? Hard to tell...!
Next up is the main villain, himself, Bojack. Many describe Bojack in his main form
as a "pirate," and this makes quite a bit of sense. His clothing seems almost "frilly,"
with an interesting cape and a few necklaces hanging down, in addition to the
bandana wrapped around his head...
...
all he's missing is the eye patch! In his base form, his skin is green and he has long yellow-ish/red
hair that falls down his back. Similar to Gokua's first form, his muscle bulk is relatively
well-toned, but not to any excess. Bojack transforms after Vegeta's arrival. His transformation is a very quick yelling and
bringing down of the arms. In his transformed state his hair changes to a much more
defined red his cape and upper clothing is "burned" away, and he grows more
muscular.
NOTES: | DBZ
MOVIE 9: Gokua & Bojack Gokua and Bojack have some of the more
traditional types of transformations where they simply power-up and
bust into larger, more powerful versions of themselves with slightly different skin and
hair colors. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 12: Janenba | Probably one of the most insane and absurd transformation sequences in the entire
DragonBall franchise, Janenba is certainly a character all to him... her... err...
itself! When the young Oni (Tank Boy) accidentally lets the soul cleansing
machine overload, all Hell breaks loose... literally! He is overtaken by Janenba,
an amalgamation of evil souls. What's most strange about Janenba is... well... look at him! Very
similar to Majin Buu when he first appeared, Janenba is very childlike in nature,
seemingly only out to have fun and amuse himself. He's extremely large with exaggerated
features, and can be found saying his name repeatedly, clapping, and laughing to himself.
He wears pinkish clothing on his lower regions and arms, and does not appear
to have a nose. He can also seemingly bend the laws of... well... anything, really, as he sees fit;
gravity and physics, in general, do not seem to be an issue for Janenba!
After Janenba's dozens of miniature self versions are defeated by Goku, and he is beaten to
a pulp by SSJ3 Goku, Janenba begins his transformation into his "true" self... a
much more demonic creature, also very similar to a Majin Buu form (specifically, the
"Chibi" form).
In
this form he is much smaller than before in every way (height and muscle mass).
His tail seems to have grown a good deal, as have his two horns. His skin is now red,
with a purple-ish armor-type surrounding over most of the body (horns, torso, and legs). Just as before, Janenba seems
to have control over much of physics, now even teleporting himself around in a series
of puzzle piece-type objects! He now only grunts and yelps, not even saying his name as
he did in the previous form. Janenba also creates a sword which he can use to slice through the air,
pushing blades of cutting wind as his opponent. NOTES: | DBZ
MOVIE 12: Janenba Possibly inspired by Majin Buu's forms, Janenba starts out as a
gigantic, bubbly, incredibly happy monster who can do little more
than say his name and punch people around as he takes over the afterlife. When he is
forced to transform, Goku finds himself facing a much smaller, more compact,
and incredibly powerful opponent that is able to not
only teleport, but form a sword that can use wind as cutting, flying
blades. |
| | DBZ MOVIE 13: Hildegarn | Hildegarn's first form is actually a full form cut in half. On the planet Konack, Hildegarn
was brought to life by evil sorcerers, but was cut in half with the help of a holy
sword. Since Hildegarn could not actually be killed, the two halves were sealed
away. One half resides within Tapion, while the other half originally resided within his brother,
Minoshia. Unfortunately, since the other half has gotten lose, this can only
mean that Minoshia is dead.
Hildegarn
is a somewhat Godzilla-like monster, if only in size and destruction. He does
the majority of crushing with his giant feet and long, swinging tail. Hildegarn's transformation seems to be more of an instant evolution than anything else.
Similar to a butterfly, Hildegarn breaks free from a cocoon-type encasing, and rises
with slightly changed features and new wings. Two long horns now stretch back
from his head, which is now more than just the skull from before.
Hildegarn's speed and power also
increases with the transformation (of course). He also seems to adopt a new teleportation-type
technique, allowing him to almost always stay one step ahead of his opponent. NOTES: | DBZ
MOVIE 13: Hildegarn Hildegarn's transformation is very much like
a caterpillar into a butterfly; he hatches from his original "skin"
into a more colorful and powerful version of himself. His head becomes more fully formed,
and he sprouts wings from his back. |
